Member of Half Century Club, B'nai Zion Congregation to Be Buried This Afternoon
Hyman Winer, 77, retired merchant and for more than 50 years a Chattanoogan, died yesterday afternoon in a local sanitarium after a lingering illness. Mr. Winer, a resident of 1905 Duncan Avenue, organized and operated, for many years the Winer Department Stores.
Mr. Winer was born Sept. 2, 1869, in Friedrichstadt, Latvia, and came to the United States in 1892, when the Russian government revoked Jewish rights. He began his career in this country as a pack peddler in Meigs County, Tennessee, and later opened business in Chattanooga and LaFayette, Ga.
He was a member of the B'nai Zion congregation and of the Chattanooga Half Century Club.
He is survived by two sons, Harry and Myer H. Winer, both of Chattanooga; three daughters, Mrs. Louis Center, Mrs. Ralph Abelman, both of Chattanooga, and Mrs. Sam Stock, Dalton, Ga.; sister, Mrs. C. Kushner, Los Angeles, and nine grandchildren.
His wife, Mrs. Minnie Winer, whom he married in January, 1892, died July 8, 1940.
Funeral services will be held in the chapel of the Page-Hancock Funeral Home at 3 o'clock this afternoon, with Rabbi Aaron Waldon officiating. Interment will be in B'nai Zion Cemetery. The family requests that flowers be omitted. An honorary escort of members of the Half Century Club will attend the services.
