Actor. He was a British-born stage and screen actor, who came to the United States through Canada in 1909, having a twenty-year Hollywood film career spanning between 1931 and the early 1950s. Credited with nearly 100 films with supporting roles, he began his prolific film career after decades of London and Broadway stage experience. For a rare appearance, he appeared in early television. Fondly, he is remembered for his character roles in popular films such as "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" in 1939, and for the three Universal Studios film "The Mummy" pictures, in 1940, 1942, and 1944, in which he played the High Priest of Karnak. He made several horror films during the 1940s. During World War I, he returned to England to serve as a lieutenant in the West Yorkshire Regiment. While in the war, he was wounded in the arm losing the use of two fingers. He died in Hollywood in 1960.
