First Roman Catholic Bishop of Worcester, Massachusetts (1950-1959); Eighth Bishop of Pittsburgh (1959-1969). Elevated to Cardinal in 1969 when transferred to Rome as Prefect of the Clergy. Did not participate in papal conclave that elected Pope John Paul I in 1978 due to illness. Member of papal conclave that elected Pope John Paul II later that year.Roman Catholic Cardinal. The son of a paper factory clerk, Boston born John Joseph Wright upon finishing his studies at Boston College, entered Saint John's Seminary in Brighton, being later sent to Rome to pursue his learning at the Pontifical Gregorian University. Ordained priest there in December 1935, back in Massachusetts he served first as a member of the teaching staff of St. John's Seminary and successively as secretary to the newly appointed archbishop of Boston, Richard J. Cushing. Appointed auxiliary for the archdiocese at the age of thirty seven, Wright received his episcopal consecration with the titular see of Egea on June 30, 1947 at the cathedral of the Holy Cross. Transferred to the diocese of Worcester on January 28, 1950 and to the diocese of Pittsburgh on January 23, 1959, Pope Paul VI named him prefect of the Sacred Congregation for the Clergy on April 23, 1969, creating him cardinal priest with the title of Gesù Divin Maestro alla Pineta Sacchetti five days later. A particularly knowledgeable man about St. Joan of Arc, suffering from a neuromuscular disorder in his legs, after unsuccessfully undergoing surgery, the Cardinal spent his remaining years in a wheelchair. He passed away of polymyositis at the Youiville Rehabilitation and Chronic Disease Hospital in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
