He started his career as a member of the New York Theatre Guild and got his first major role in the Broadway production of "The Age of Innocence" in 1929. His screen debut was in the movie "The Wiser Sex" (1932), followed by "Today We live" (1933). A veteran of over 40 films, his most noted credits included "Mutiny on the Bounty" (1935), for which he was nominated for a Academy Award for Best Actor, "The Lives of a Bengal Lancer" (1935), "Dangerous" (1935), "Five Graves to Cairo" (1943), "The Man on the Eiffel Tower" (1950) and "In Harm's Way" (1965). For television, he appeared on "Bonanza," "Ben Casey," "The Twilight Zone," Wagon Train," and "The Alfred Hitchcock Hour." He was also the second husband of actress Joan Crawford from 1935 to 1939, whom he made seven films with. For his contribution to the motion picture industry, he has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame located at 6560 Hollywood Blvd.
