Son of William Thomas and Henrietta Spurrell. First generation American (parents immigrated from England and Germany).
Flew B-24 Bombers in the CBI Theater during WW II, which included flying gas through the Himalayas during the rainy season, bombing the REAL bridges over the "River Kwai", and bombing the most Southern edges of the Japanese Empire. Retired after 25 years in the service as a B-52 pilot when these bombers were still being produced. Earned TWO Distinguish Flying Crosses during his years of service.
Earned his Bachelors and Masters Degrees after Air Force retirement, then taught mathematics in junior high school and community college for decades, finally retiring in the late 1990s.
Raised five children, three of which survive as of March, 2011. Married more than 57 years to the former Mary Elizbeth Painter, who survives as of March, 2011.
