Connecticut Governor. He was the son of Deacon Abiram Chamberlain and his wife Sophronia Ruth Burt; these families had been in New England for over five generations. He was educated in Civil Engineering at Williston Seminary in Easthampton, Massachusetts and worked with his father as a civil engineer after graduation for several years. The entire family relocated in 1856 to New Britain. In 1867, he entered the banking profession, and by 1881, was the President of New Britain National Bank. He married Charlotte E. Roberts on November 21, 1872; the couple had two sons. Upon getting a promotion, the family relocated to Meridian, Connecticut, and this was his hometown for the rest of his life . As a Republican, he entered politics in the 1870's with first being a member of the Meridian city council; a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives from 1877 to 1878; and was Connecticut's state comptroller from 1901 to 1902. He won the 1902 Republican gubernatorial nomination, and was elected Connecticut's governor. Wesleyan University conferred upon the governor in 1903 the degree of Doctor of Laws. After his term, he retired from politics and returned to Meridian involved in several businesses: railroad, cutlery, hotel.
