Born in Spring Lake Township, he moved to Mason County with his parents when he was 6 years old. He grew up farming near Topeka. He was the Oldest son of George Himmel and grandson of Adam Himmel. He married Anna H. Kreiling on Oct 17, 1889. Charles was known throughout Mason County due to his connection and activity with the Illinois Farmers Institute which he served as director for many yrs and President of the Mason County Organization which preceded the Farm Bureau in Agriculture advancement. For more than 35 yrs, he was the local school director, member of the Evangelical church, member of the Topeka camp and also the Modern Woodmen of America
