Last evening at seven o'clock Eber Townsend died at his home, No. 124 South New street, after a lingering illness with cancer. The deceased was born in West Bradford October 12th, 1822, and was well known to a large circle of friends and relatives. He was a carpenter by trade and for many years followed that avocation. For the past thirty years he has resided in West Chester, and the last twenty-three if these he has resided in the house where he breathed his last moments of life last evening.

During the war he enlisted in Company C, 175th Regiment, Pa. Volunteers, going into service on the 16th of October, 1862, and remaining in continuous service until August 7th, 1863.

For the past fifteen years he has been a member of McCall Post, No. 31, G.A.R. He is also a member of Kenewa Council, Senior Order United American Mechanics, of this borough, he being a charter member of the organization.

During later years of his life he was been employed as a tipstaff in our Court, being appointed by Judge Futhey in 1880. Several years previous to receiving the position of tipstaff he was watchman at the Government paper mill, Glen Mills, where bank notes were made at one time.

Two brothers, Emmor and Joseph, survive the deceased, and both of them reside on a farm at Zermatt. The wife of the deceased died about three years ago. The deceased was well known to a great many persons in this county, who have always known him as an upright conscientious and patriotic citizen.

TOWNSEND- At West Chester, on Monday, January 20, 1896, Eber Townsend, in the 74th year of his age.

Relatives and friends of the family are respectfully invited to attend the funeral from his late residence, No 124 South New street, Thursday, January 23d. Meet at the house at 10 o'clock a.m. Services at 11 o'clock. Interment at Grove M.E. Cemetery, West Whiteland. The members of McCall Post, No 31, G.A.R., and the members of Kenhawa Council, Senior Order of United American Mechanics are also invited to attend the funeral.

Eber Townsend, who died Monday, was a charter member of the West Chester Beneficial Association. He was also a member and Executive Committee of the same organization, being appointed on the first of the year.
