Charles Bradlee was in the music publishing business, dealer in pianos and tunes of same, and played the clarinet in the theater orchestra. In 1853 his music publishing store was located at 184 Washington St. or Franklin Street. Oliver Ditson, the well-known Boston music dealer, began his career as a boy in Bradlee's store. Bradlee's catalog was taken over by Oliver Ditson & Company.
"The ABC Song" was first copyrighted in 1835 by Boston music publisher Charles Bradlee under the title "The A.B.C., a German air with variations for the flute with an easy accompaniment for the piano forte." The melody was attributed to 18th-century composer Louis Le Maire.
