Mary Frances Wood Gregory ~
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, 542 Hickory, with Rev. Larry Tarver officiating. Burial will follow in Hawley Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Born in Abilene, Texas, on October 17, 1929, to Verna C. (Collins) and William T. (Tommie) Wood, Mary was reared in Abilene and a graduate of Abilene High School. She also attended Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene. She died on Wednesday, October 12, 2004, at Anson General Hospital in Anson.

"For 56 years, Mary was my wife, my friend, my counselor, my therapist, my encourager, my travel companion, my hostess for countless gatherings, my prayer warrior and my inspiration.

As the wife of a minister, she took many criticisms, rejections and embarrassments on my behalf. She postponed trips, gave up parties and missed special occasions - many at the last minute - while I attended many emergencies at the church.

But, Mary's life was not uneventful. Discovering her spiritual ability in working with children, she helped to organize and direct several preschools and kindergartens in Texas and Colorado. Her sensitivity to children's needs helped her discover and correct children with learning disabilities before entering public school. For nine years, she was a children's/preschool specialist for the Colorado Baptist General Convention Sunday School Department, leading seminars for children's workers in four of the 10 Southern Metro Clinics from 1982-1992.

Mary was endowed with the spiritual ability to counsel people of all ages. Once, when we needed a Singles teacher, Mary shifted her focus to single adults and soon found herself heavily scheduled with discussion groups and individual sessions far into the night. She was also a great help in family counseling.

And, on one Sunday when I was too sick to attend an evening service, Mary even preached for me - and nearly stole my job!

She had been a church secretary and education secretary in four of our churches, and once was the secretary to an Episcopal Rector. Her real desire in retirement was to have published one book, completed a second book and begin working on her third.

Thanks, Mary, for a fulfilling and interesting life. Together we made a pretty good team. Love, Rowland."

Mary is survived by Rowland G. Gregory, husband of Abilene; Steven T. Gregory, son of Melissa, TX; Linda Kathleen (Kathy) Barnes, sister of Clyde; Bryan Barnes and Guy Barnes, nephews of Hawley; and numerous cousins, plus extensive family members.

Memorials may be made to Hendrick Hospice Care, P.O. Box 1922, Abilene, TX 79604.
