Third of three children of John and Johanna Witt Gerken, Bernice married Albert L. Hill on June 25, 1950 in Sibley, IL. They had one daughter. The Hills moved to Melvin to accommodate Albert's railroad job in 1953. About 1958 they moved to Chatsworth where Albert's family lived.

Bernice was very active in the Evangelical Lutheran Churches of Sibley, Melvin and Chatsworth. She received a plaque in 1983 for teaching Sunday School for 46 years. She also taught Bible School every summer in Sibley.

She served as president and vice president of St. Paul's American Lutheran Women and as secretary of education and secretary of stewardship at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Chatsworth.

She was a well-known local baby sitter and an excellent cook and gardener.
