WALLACE FREDERICK CARDEN BIRMINGHAM, AL (formerly CLINTON, TN)

Wallace F. Carden, age 91, departed this life peacefully at South Haven Nursing Facility in Hoover, AL on Sunday, May 22, 2016.

He was born on July 8, 1924, in Briceville, TN.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clayton and Virdie Carden; his wife of 63 years, Blanche B. Carden; and son-in-law James Mitchell. He was a long-time member of First Baptist Church, Clinton, TN.

He is survived by his daughter, Karen C. Mitchell and son W. Fred Carden, Jr.; grandson J. Peter Mitchell; grand-daughter Virginia (Rob) Bensinger; grandsons William and Samuel Carden; great-grandchildren Anna and Jay Bensinger.

Wallace was a veteran of World War II, serving with the 28th Infantry Division in Western Europe. He participated in the liberation of Paris with the 28th and other Allied forces. He was captured during the Battle of the Bulge, and was a prisoner-of-war at Stalag 9B and later transferred with 350 GIs to the Berga Slave Labor Camp. After a 30-day forced march through Germany and Czechoslovakia he was liberated in April by the US 11th Armored Division.

He returned from the War and married Blanche Braden in March 1947. He worked at the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant then managed by Tennessee Eastman. Later he graduated in 1952 from the University of Tennessee with a BS in Chemistry while on the GI Bill. He then worked at the Y-12 Plant, retiring from Lockheed-Martin in 1994 after a combined 44 years. He enjoyed tennis and all UT sports.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 25th from 5:00-8:00 pm at the Ho lley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton, TN.

Graveside service with military honors on Thursday, May 26th at 2:00 pm at Woodhaven Memorial Gardens, Powell, TN. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to HonorAir Knoxville or the Tennessee Holocaust Commission. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements
