Jeremiah Hancock was the ninth of thirteen children born to James and Jestern Hancock. He married Ellen Griner in 1826. The couple had many children. Jeremiah Hancock on 13 August 1861 wrote to Georgia Governor Joseph E. Brown to inform him "a portion of the citizens of this county assembled today" to organise a battalion and had directed him to write requesting authorisation and assistance to prepare the same. Company H 50th Ga Infantry (Confederate)was raised in Colquitt County, and five Hancocks initially enlisted. Jeremiah's son General Harrison Hancock was a private in Co H 50th Ga Infantry and was killed at Cramptons Gap 14 September 1862. Jeremiah's nephew Jeremiah T. Hancock died in the same action and was a corporal in the same company. Another son of Jeremiah was Martin Watts Hancock who died in Savannah Ga 14 July 1862 a private in Company H. The first born son James E. Hancock joined Company C of 11 Regiment Cavalry Ga and died in 1864. Another son Hardin Henry Hancock also volunteered and enlisted in Company H and survived the war. John (Jack) Hancock was another survivor of Co H and a nephew of Jeremiah.
