Actor. He was a Scottish-born American character actor, made his film debut in 1923 with "Six Cylinder Love." He actually began his acting career at age eight on a Broadway stage. He was a prolific film actor in over 100 Hollywood movies during its Golden Age. Among his films: "Murder At the Vanities" and "The Merry Widow" both in 1934, "The Whole Town's Talkin," "The Informer," and "Captain Blood" all in 1935, Frank Capra's "You Can't Take It With You" in 1938, John Ford's "Stagecoach" in 1939, and "State Fair" in 1945. He posthumously received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960. He bravely fought in the Spanish–American War in the United States Army and contracted yellow fever which caused him to lose his hair.
