Tom De Koster was born in Oosterwyk, Netherlands, April 28, 1878, the son of Lucas De Koster and Neeltje Verduin. At the age of 8 he emigrated to the United States with his father, sisters and brothers. They came directly to Sioux County where he lived the rest of his life in and near Hull. On March 31, 1909, he was married to Johanna Van Wyk. To this union three children were born: Lewis De Koster of Orange City; Greta Rosenberg of Waupun, Wisconsin; and Mitchell De Koster, who preceded him in death in 1944.

He was a graduate of Hull Educational Institute of the class of 1902. He was a successful building contractor in the Hull vicinity for 49 years. During his lifetime he was active in the Sioux Concert Band in Hull and served as Secretary of the Sunday School of the First Reformed Church in Hull for over 30 years.

He was preceded in death by one brother, John De Koster, and one sister, Johanna De Koster, and one son, Mitchell, and is survived by his wife, Johanna De Koster, two children, one sister, Anna Meys-Dykstra of Seattle, Washington, and one brother, Dick A. De Koster of Hull, and six grandchildren.
