David Hannah, Jr. died Monday, March 7, 2011. He was born in Houston on April 9, 1922, to David and Ethel Hannah.
He attended The Darlington School in Rome, Georgia. In 1939 he enrolled in the Rice Institute, where he met and later married his beloved wife Catherine. Following graduation, he worked for a brief time as an accountant. He then entered the real estate business and developed property in Houston, Colorado, Louisiana, and Australia.
In the late 1970s, with the help and support of many friends, he became involved in the privatization of space exploration. Innovations instigated by his company, Space Services, at that time are still in effect. As a result, David was honored by the Explorer's Club in New York City.
He was a life-long member of the First Presbyterian Church of Houston where he served as Deacon, Elder, Clerk of the Session, Sunday School Superintendent, and teacher.
David founded the Rampart School for boys in Colorado and served on the Boards of Brazos Presbyterian Homes; Austin College, where he received an honorary degree; Hermann Hospital; Presbyterian School; and Star of Hope Mission. He was a member of the Downtown Kiwanis Club of Houston, Houston Committee on Foreign Relations, and the Huisache Club. Close sailing friends included Dr. Jack Lancaster and Dr. Don Chapman.
David was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Catherine Coburn Hannah, and his second wife Elizabeth "Bo" Hawkins. He was also preceded in death by his sister Mary Hannah Smith and husband A. Frank Smith, Jr.
He is survived by his brother John Tweed Hannah and wife Rita, sons David Hannah, III and wife Kenzie, Douglas Hannah and wife Flo, and daughter Glen Cole and husband Hugh Cole, Jr.; grandchildren David Hannah IV, Richard Hannah and wife Elana, John Marshall Hannah, Catherine Hannah Brown and husband Thomas, Sarah Hannah, Emily Hannah Coulter and husband Aaron, Hugh Cole, III and wife Elizabeth, Angus Cole, Kate Cole, and Alexander Cole; great-grandchildren Price and Charlie Hannah, Anne and Eleanor Coulter, and Spencer Cole; and by numerous nieces and a nephew.
His great faith in God made his life a wonderful adventure. His last years were as a resident of the Hallmark, one of the retirement facilities established through his efforts. These were warm and supportive years spent with many old and new friends, for which he was truly grateful.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the administration and staff of The Hallmark for their loving care at the end of David's life. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations in David's name to: The Hallmark, 4718 Hallmark, Houston, TX 77056.
Following a private graveside service at Glenwood Cemetery, a memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 5300 Main Street, Houston, Texas on Monday, March 14th at 1:00 pm.
