Joy Francine Kirk Little, loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend, left this earth to join her Heavenly Father on Ash Wednesday, March 9, 2011.
Joy was born on Good Friday, March 25, 1932 in Seminole, Oklahoma. She was preceded in death by her father, James Franklin Kirk, her mother Gladys Irene Kleckner Kirk, and her brother James Leroy Kirk.
She graduated Valedictorian of the Class of 1950 at Altus High School, and went on to earn her Bachelor's degree in Education from Oklahoma University. While playing basketball in high school, she was selected as the Oklahoma All-State Forward, and helped lead her team to winning the state championship game in 1950. Joy was also appointed to the 1950's All-State Decade Team. She was inducted into the Jackson County, Oklahoma Athletic Hall of Fame in 1991.
Joy married John D. Little on September 17, 1954. She is survived by her husband; the couple's three children, M. Kathleen Weaver, D. Kirk Little, and R. Francine Reeves; nine grandchildren, Forrest K. Little, Joy K. Weaver, Robert C. Little, Kimberly D. Weaver, Elizabeth A. Reeves, Meredith K. Little, Caroline M. Weaver, Raleigh E. Little, and Katherine G. Reeves; and many other beloved extended family members. Joy was a devoted Marine Corps wife, following her husband to many duty stations, including California, Virginia, Maryland, South Korea, and Camp Lejeune, NC where the couple retired. She taught middle, high school, and college courses, and coached several school basketball teams, including the Lejeune High School team. She was named Onslow County Teacher of the Year in 1980, while teaching at Northwoods Park Middle School.
Joy was a faithful and active member of Northwoods United Methodist Church for almost forty years, and held many church offices and leadership positions. She sought to live her entire life following the example of Christ, and served as a beautiful testament to her faith for many people. Joy organized visitations to house-bound congregation members, ran Touch of Love, a ministry program that provides hot meals for the elderly and disabled, and led Sunday School, Vacation Bible school, Youth Fellowship, and Bible Study groups.
After her retirement, Joy spent time caring for her elderly mother and for her grandchildren. She provided daily childcare for her grandchildren, helped them with homework, attended as many of their extracurricular activities and performances as possible, and played an integral role in their childhoods and adult lives. She constantly led by her Christian example, encouraging others to always be "loving, kind, and good" to everyone they met.
Funeral services are Friday at 3 p.m. at Northwoods United Methodist Church, and will be followed by family visitation in the church fellowship hall. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Northwoods United Methodist Church's Building Fund.
