1885 Biography
Edward Cleveland, general farmer and stock-raiser, section 33, Hume Township, was born in Oneida Co., N.Y., Sept 27, 1841, and is a son of David and Amy Cleveland. He was about 12 years of age when his parents emigrated West with their family and settled in Hume Township.
He was reared as a farmer's son, remaining at home until he was 23 years of age. When 21 years old he enlisted for the war in defense of his country, enrolling in Co. C, 75th Regt. Ill. Vol. Inf., at Dixon. The regiment was attached to the Army of the Cumberland, under Gens. Buel and Rosecrans. Oct. 8, he was engaged in the hottest of the battle at Perryville, Ky., and was wounded in both legs below the knees by a gunshot from the enemy. After lying in the hospital about four months he was honorably, discharged on account of physical debility, at Louisville, Ky., Dec. 11, 1862.
Jan. 3, 1865, he was married at Prophetstown, this county, to Miss Harriet Morehead, who was born in Venango Co., Pa., Jan 17, 1847, and came West to Illinois with her father when very young.
Mr. and Mrs. Cleveland have three children, - Amy, Grant and Mary Blanche. During the spring after his marriage Mr. C. settled on the farm where he now resides, then comprising 40 acres but now 160, all well improved and equipped with good farm buildings. In his political views, Mr. C. is a stanch Democrat, and he has been Road Commissioner three years and Tax Collector four years.
