PIONEER EDDY COUNTY RANCHER DIES
FOLLOWING HEART ATTACK WEDNESDAY
Death claimed a true Eddy county pioneer--a man who had lived in the county 63 years--when Joe Welch, Sr., 73-year-old rancher, died Wednesday night at his ranch home on the Delaware.
Death came quietly. He succumbed to a heart attack as he sat in a chair at his home. He had suffered previous attacks in recent months, but had quickly recovered and he continued his daily ranch activities.
Quiet and unassuming, Welch was Eddy county's longest-time resident. As a ten-year-old youth, he came here with his parents in a covered wagon from Cow Creek, Texas in 1880.
Bringing their horses and cattle along with the wagon train, the Welch family settled in the Seven Rivers area, but moved to Black River and settling near the old Washington ranch the following year. Carlsbad did not exist in those days, and Seven Rivers was a thriving community with a reputation for frontier gun-play.
Welch's father, two brothers and three sisters are buried in the Black River Cemetery. His mother was buried in Washington.
He had lived on the Delaware country ranch, below Malaga and near the Texas line, for about 30 years. Loved and respected by all who knew him--and he had a wide acquaintance in this section--Welch had a vast knowledge of the cow-and-ranch business and was known as a "top cowboy" among his friends. He probably knew more cattle brands in this section than any living man.
He knew the life of the pioneer, all its hardships and privations. He was among the pioneers who blazed a trail to this section of New Mexico in the days when it was open country and the six-shooter was the main "law" of the land.
Besides his wife, who was with him at the ranch home at the time of his death, he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Walter Phelan and three sons, Dudley, Herbert and Joe, Jr., all of Carlsbad, and three brothers, Will Welch of Cutbank, Mont., and Wiley Welch and Tom Welch, who live in Washington.
One son, Herbert Welch, is away on a vacation and could not be located today.
Funeral arrangements were pending until word is received from Herbert and Mr. Welch's brothers.
