James W. "Pete" Burnett
James W. "Pete" Burnett, son of Charles Jefferson Burnett & Lillian May (Laird) Burnett, was born April 16, 1920 in Massac County, IL. He departed this life Monday morning, June 19, 2006, at 1:02 AM at the Massac Memorial Hospital in Metropolis, IL.
At the time of his passing, Pete had attained the age of 86 years 2 months & 3 days.
Pete was united in marriage to Evelyn H. Larrison on March 1, 1941 in Jackson, MO. Together, they had enjoyed over 65 years of marriage.
In addition to his wife, Pete is survived by: A Son, Randy & Janet Burnett of Metropolis, IL; A Daughter,Patty Burnett of Metropolis, IL; 4 Grandchildren: Stacy & Jason Towery, Chad & Gentry Burnett, Dennis & Shannon Burnett and Kirk & Gayla Burnett; 10 Great Grandchildren: Caitlin, Brandon, Isaac, Bryce, Alex, Austin, Mason, Jacob, Brooke, & Dakota; 5 Sisters: Evelyn Dillman of New York City, NY, Helen Grant of Buncombe, IL, Juanita Smithson of Fenton, MO, Ethel Rose Duncan of Tilden, IL and Lucille Doblebower of East Alton, IL; Nieces & Nephews.
In addition to his Parents, Pete was preceded in death by: A Grandson, Jeremy Burnett; 3 Sisters: Reba Warwick, Agnes Girtman, & Hazel Melcher; 2 Brothers: Cletus Burnett & David Burnett.
Pete was a U.S. Army veteran serving in the European Theater during World War II. He participated in the D-Day Invasion at Normandy and received the Purple Heart. Pete was a member of the Marion, IL American Legion Post.
Pete was employed as a Welder's Assistant and later as an Operator at Trunkline Gas Co. in Joppa for 29 years, prior to his retirement in January 1983.
Pete was a 50 year member of Belknap Masonic Lodge # 822 AF&AM. He was also a member of the Cherry Street Pentecostal Church in Metropolis, IL.
Pete enjoyed fishing, camping, woodworking and especially enjoyed mowing. He will be remembered as a wonderful Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great-Grandfather, Brother, Uncle, and Friend.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday morning, June 22, 2006, at 11 AM at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna. Rev. Russell Gilbert will officiate. Burial will be in the Anderson Cemetery in the Boaz community.
Friends may call after 5 PM Wednesday at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna.
Masonic rites will be accorded at 7 PM Wednesday under the auspices of Belknap Masonic Lodge # 822 AF&AM.
Memorials may be made to the Massac Memorial Hospital, 28 Chick St., Metropolis, IL. 62960.
