Thomas Hancock was born December 16, 1843 in Australia, the son of William Hancock and Elizabeth Dixon*. He came to Oregon with his parents in 1850 and remained on his father’s farm until 1862 when he enlisted in Company K, First Oregon Volunteer Infantry. His regiment served in the plains suppressing Indian uprisings. He was discharged June 25, 1866 and took up a homestead claim of 160 acres, five miles east of Elkton on the Drain road. He farmed there until moving to Elkton in 1903.

On June 13, 1886 Thomas married Kiersti Persson*. He was a member of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons Lodge No. 63 in Elkton and the Drain Post Grand Army of the Republic. Thomas and Kiersti had two children: Oscar William Hancock* and Clara Hancock Riley*. Thomas Hancock died in Elkton on October 12, 1917.
