Major Von Borcke came to America in 1862 and was assigned as an aide to Major General JEB Stuart in the Confederate Army during the civil war. He was quite tall (even by today's standards) and weighed nearly 200 pounds.

Heros was well-known for his outrageous sense of humor. On one occasion at a ball, he dressed in a hoopskirt and carried a dainty little fan while he danced with a fellow soldier. When he grew tired of entertaining, he pretended to faint and was carried off to another room.

In 1864, he was shot in the neck at Middletown, VA, but survived. However, the ball he had been struck with remained in his lung.

He was promoted to Lt. Col. by the Congress of the CSA in December 1864.

When he returned to Germany after the Civil War, he would always fly a Confederate flag from the roof of his home.

Von Borcke is buried in the family plot at his ancestral home in Giesenbrügge, Posen, Prußen (modern Gizyn), Poland.

A military tombstone was provided by the U.S. Government to replace the historic one destroyed by the Soviets after WW II. It was placed, with full military honors, by the Sons of Confederate Veterans in August 2008.
