Reidsville - E. B. Register passed away Thursday morning.
E. B. Register was born July 14, 1915 in Homerville, GA., to Elbert B. Register and Addie Dame Register.
He grew up there and graduated from Homerville High School in 1932, Georgia Normal College in 1933. He was a graduate of International Correspondence School and many, many courses in banking and finance.
Mr. Register met DeWeese Thomas while serving the Civilian Conservation Corps., in Reidsville during the mid-30's. They were married in August, 1936.
Mr. Register began his working career after leaving the CCC in 1936 with Washington Sales Company in North Carolina. He returned to Reidsville in 1938 and worked for the Georgia State Prison until 1939 when he came to The Tattnall Bank as a bookkeeper. He was then employed in the banking industry in Savannah, Tifton and Claxton becoming a Georgia Department of Banking and Finance bank examiner in 1944. He returned to The Tattnall Bank in 1939 and remained until his death working in every department in the Bank. He was elected Exec. Vice President, CEO and Director in 1946 and then became President and Chairman of the Board in 1973 until the present.
During this time he also was owner and operator of Reidsville Insurance Agency, was City Clerk for the City of Reidsville and City Recorder's Court Judge, a tax accountant and cattle farmer. He also served on the Boards for Southeastern Technical College, Pinewood Christian Academy and GA State Board of Corrections.
Mr. Register was involved in many civic organizations over the yeas and his willingness to work and attention to detail were evident not only in Tattnall County but state-wide.
He was affiliated with the Rising Sun Lodge, Woodmen of the World, Charter Member of Reidsville Lions Club, Tattnall County Hospital Authority, Tattnall County Development Authority, Reidsville and Tattnall Chambers of Commerce, Sons of the American Revolution, and Reidsville's Grand Rascals. Mr. Register was involved in sports in high school, the CCC camp and his early life, playing on football, basketball, tennis, boxing and track teams.
With all the civic honors, closest to his heart was his membership at Reidsville Baptist Church where he has served as Deacon, Chairman of Board of Deacons, Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent, Chairman of Finance Committee, Board of Trustees, Baptist Training Union Director and Treasurer. He also served as Treasurer for the Tattnall-Evans Baptist Association.
Mr. Register was preceded in death by his only son, E. Bert Register, Jr., in 1999.
He has been an inspiration and guiding light to many over the years and will leave a legacy of love and laughter to all who knew him.
Mr. Register is survived by his wife, DeWeese, of 68 years; two grandsons, E. Bert Register, III of Reidsville and Michael T. Register of Tampa, FL; two great-grandchildren of Tampa, FL and his employees of The Tattnall Bank, the majority of which have been there many, many years.
Visitation will be held 5:00 p.m., Friday, March 11, 2005 at Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home.
Funeral Service will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 12, 2005 at Reidsville Baptist Church, conducting the service will be Rev. Sterling Bargeron, not only his pastor for many years but a personal friend as well.
Interment: Reidsville City Cemetery.
Active pallbearers are Ray Blount, George Jones, W. Louie Smith, Sr., Neil Rogers, Glen Cheney and Len Hauss.
Honorary pallbearers are Deacons of Reidsville Baptist Church, members of the E. B. Register Sunday School Class at Reidsville Baptist Church, Directors of The Tattnall Bank, and members of the RGR Club.
