Named after his maternal grandfather, Hiram “Hi” Beadle was born in St. Johns, Michigan. Hiram, who was also known as "H.G.," had two brothers, John A. Beadle and Forrest D. "Bud" Beadle, along with a sister, Athol, who became the second wife of John D. Withrow. His family lived in St. Johns until about 1918, when they relocated to Lansing. The family lived next door to his mother's parents. He spent a lot of time there, often staying overnight. Grandpa Little was very fond of his namesake grandson.
Hi was an outstanding high school athlete, and a very fun-loving guy. He played football, basketball and baseball. He was named to George Remington's all-state football team as a halfback.
He met his future wife Ruth in high school. He was dating her friend Elsie at the time. Ruth's mother had died when she was young, and her father wasn't prepared to be a single parent. Ruth lived with the Al Wagner family in Lansing. After high school, she went to work for Durant Motors in Lansing, and eventually moved to Detroit with Durant. They both dated around while they were in different cities. Hi even had a date with someone else the night before they were married. Ruth called him that night and asked if he wanted to go to Angola, Indiana the next day. Hi said, "OK, why not" and they thus eloped in 1934. Ruth Williams Beadle became the "Most Popular Woman in Lansing" for raising the most money in a charity event –- but was so secretly unhappy that in 1956 she committed suicide by hanging. Hi later admitted that he never understood the root cause of his wife’s depression. .
