2 FOUND EXECUTED AT WORK - FATHER OF VICTIM DISCOVERS BODIES BEHIND RESTAURANT
Columbus Dispatch, The (OH) - Sunday, November 24, 1991
Author: Connie A. Higgins, and Felix Hoover, Dispatch Staff Reporters

One was trying to save money for college, the other for a car.

The two West Siders suffered the same fate when they were found fatally shot, execution-style, early yesterday behind the West Side restaurant where they worked.

Laura Williams, 23, of Stephen Drive S., and Stephen Faun , 18, of Holly Hill Drive, were found about 2 a.m. at the rear of the Old Country Buffet at 3670 Soldano Blvd. in the Consumer Square West shopping center.

Williams was a manager and Faun a part-time worker. The two were on duty at closing time. They were not romantically linked, said the victims' parents.

Police said they have no motives in the slayings, which have become the city's 126th and 127th homicides this year.

Mike Faun , Stephen 's father, said he became suspicious when his son didn't arrive home at the usual time.

"He's usually home at the same time unless somebody needs a ride," the elder Faun said.

After driving to the restaurant from his West Side home, the elder Faun found the slain victims at the rear of the restaurant.

As soon as he saw them, he told a worker at a nearby Cub Foods store to get help.

Police and medics were called to the scene where they found the slain victims. Both were shot in the head, said Franklin County deputy coroner Patrick Fardal.

No suspects were known yesterday, homicide detectives said. Police did not release details as to whether evidence of an attack was found inside the restaurant, which closed at 9 p.m.

The estimated time of the slayings was between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m., police said.

The West Side restaurant is closed temporarily. People who went to the restaurant yesterday were referred to the chain's other two Columbus-area locations.

Roe Hatlen, chairman of the Old Country Buffet restaurants, came to Columbus from the corporate headquarters in Eden Prairie, Minn., and offered a $25,000 reward for information leading to the conviction and arrest of the killers.

"We are doing everything we can to cooperate with the police on the investigation of this heinous crime and to help all of us adjust to our loss," Hatlen said in a statement.

The chain is security-conscious, and no similar tragedy has occurred at its other restaurants, he said.

The victims were described by Hatlen as "model employees." The company has offered to help their families any way possible, he said.

Stephen Faun was a line worker who "did cleanup, whatever they wanted him to do," his father said. "He was just working like any other schoolkid."

His son, a senior at Franklin Heights High School, was earning money to help pay for his car.

Nana Young, Williams' mother, said her daughter planned to attend Columbus State Community College in January. She wanted to teach elementary school.

Her daughter started working at the restaurant two years ago and was promoted to shift leader about seven months ago, Young said.
