Dies Suddenly At Courthouse

Dr. E. P. James passes away suddenly at the courthouse Sunday afternoon from heart failure.

Sunday afternoon while many people were enjoying themselves entertaining friends who had spent the Sabbath following Christmas with them or were watching the "kiddies" playing with the toys Santa had brought them, and just as a young couple, happy in the new found joy that hence forth their pathways through life would lead them side by side, had left his presence, he who had made them then one was suddenly called to answer the Great Summons. Dr. E. P. James, justice of the peace having just concluded a marriage ceremony at the courthouse was suddenly stricken with heart failure and died before medical aid could reach him. He had been summoned to the courthouse to perform a marriage ceremony and after he had officiated at the ceremony he had complained of feeling unwell and had sent for a car to take him home. While seated in a chair waiting for the car he suddenly fell back dead. Heart failure is supposed to be the cause of his death. Dr. James was born in Tennessee in 1849 and was therefore 71 years of age. When about twenty years of age he moved to Denton, Texas, living there until he came to this city in 1896. Since becoming a citizen of Durant 24 years ago, he has held the confidence and respect of his fellow townsmen and died universally esteemed by all. To mourn him he leaves a wife with whom he had traveled life's road for more than fifty-three years, and six children, Mrs. L. W. Hunter of Santa Anna, Texas; Gid James, of Denison, Texas; Ed James, of San Antonia, Texas, and Riley, Vernon and Ollie James, of this city. He was laid to rest Tuesday afternoon in Highland Cemetery, Rev. E. G. Butler, of the Baptist church, his pastor, conducting the services.
