U.S. Congressman, Illinois Governor. Raised as a farmer, he was elected to the Indiana Territorial Council, (1805-08). When Illinois Territory was formed he was elected a Independent Delegate to Congress, serving (1812-13). He also served as receiver of public moneys in the general land office at Kaskaskia, Illinois, serving (1814-18). Upon the admission of Illinois as a State into the Union, he was elected as a Democrat-Republican the first Governor of Illinois, serving (l818-22). After leaving office, he was appointed register of the land office for the district of Kaskaskia and served until his death from pneumonia at age 58.
