United States Congressman. A 1907 graduate of the Harvard Law School, Mills entered politics in 1914 when he was elected to the New York state senate. In 1917 he left the senate to serve in the army during the First World War. After the war, he returned to politics and in 1921 was elected to represent New York's 17th District in the United States House of Representatives, a post he held until 1927. In 1926 he made an unsuccessful campaign to be elected Governor of New York. In 1927 he was appointed Undersecretary of the Treasury under Andrew Mellon until 1932, when he was appointed Secretary of the Treasury until 1933. He was the grandson of banker and philanthropist Darius Ogden Mills.
