Johns Edwin Astell was born near Jacksonville, in Morgan County on March 24, 1861. He was the third of eight children born to William and Mary Russell Astell These children in order of birth were Sarah, William, John, Nanny, James, Emma, Ida and George Henry. All are now deceased except George Henry, who lives near West Lebanon, Ind.
The family moved from Morgan to Champaign county and settled on the Broadlands tract on land in 1876.
John Edwin Astell and Maria Jane Blair were united in marriage in October 14, 1891. To this union two sons were born, Louis Alexander of Urbana and William Max of Homer.
For the first 14 years the family lived in Champaign County. Then they lived in Douglas County from 1906 to 1916 They then returned to Champaign county and settled near Homer were husband and wife have lived up to the present time.
For more than five years the deceased has been in failing health. During the past two years he has been confined almost entirely to the house.
On Thursday, Oct. 8, he was fatally stricken and departed from the life Tuesday morning, October 13, at the age of 75 years, 6 months, and 19 days.
