Royal A. Briggs was born in 1844, in Hampton, Washington Co., New York, he was the third son of shoemaker George J. Briggs (b.abt.1810 in VT) and his wife Eliza (Hunter)Briggs (b.abt.1818 in VT).
Census records showed that Royal A. Briggs grew up with his mother and father and 5 siblings (George W., Charles H., Loyal A., Cecilia and Floyd Briggs) in and around the Fairhaven area of Rutland County, Vermont, and he worked as a Barber.
At age 18, he enlisted in Rutland Vermont, as a Union Soldier in the Civil War, and served with the 54th Massachusetts Infantry (Colored).

Royal A. Hunter died on July 22, 1879, at Fairhaven, Rutland Co. VT, at age 33 years 11 mos 26 days.
