Nathaniel Baker, Jr., eldest surviving s. of Nathaniel Baker (1679-1750) by first wife Mercy Binney (1682-1718), b. Dec. 15, 1709 (bp. Feb. 15, 1709/10) at Barnstable, Mass. He d. Mar. 20, 1791 at Barnstable.

On Sept. 7, 1732 at Tisbury, Mass., Nathaniel m. Ann(a) Lumbert [Orig. Tisbury Town Book, p. 16: "Nathaniel Baker Junr. & Ann Lumbert were married ye 7th of September 1732. Recorded pr. Jabez Athearn, (Town) Clerk"], dau. of Jonathan Lumbert and Rachel Tilton. She was b. of record Feb. 7, 1710/11 at Tisbury, Mass and d. Aug. 27, 1768 at Barnstable, Mass.

Unfortunately, many purported facts in print regarding this couple are erroneous. First, the May 20, 1732 published intention of Nathaniel and Ann's marriage in the Barnstable Town Records includes the phrase that at the time Ann was "of Newton." This was changed by Fred A. Baker in 1917 [*/1] and copied by Charles Edson Robinson in his 1925 pub. Robinson Genealogy to "of Newtown (Cambridge)." All number of persons trying to find the origins of Ann Lumbert of Newton or Newtown were misled by the 1732 marriage intention and 1925 Robinson Genealogy. It is likely that Newtown is correct, but it was for a section of the Town of Tisbury, Mass. where the intended bride was born, raised and married. [*/2]

Second, Nathaniel's gravestone is in error in stating his age at death. And, based on Ann's recorded date of birth at Falmouth her pre-1900 transcribed inscription was either misread or cut wrong. When she d. Aug. 24, 1768 she was not "in ye 68th year of her age," but only 57 years old and Ætatis 58 (i.e., in the 58th year of her age).

Third, per the Barnstable records Nathaniel and wife Ann had four recorded childen: Isaac (1734), Mercy (1738), Binney (1751) and Anna (1754). As noted, the birth of the second and third child is separated by 13-1/2 years. On the face the assumption would be that there likely were other children betw. Mercy and Binney. But a diligent search has found no evidence of other children and a variety of possibilities could explain the separation of 13-1/2 years between the latter two children. Fred Baker in his 1917 Rev. Nicholas Baker genealogy added a purported 5th child, son Samuel of unknown birthdate, who cannot be confirmed as a child of the family. The 1925 Robinson Genealogy copied Baker then added an unnamed son b. Sept. 12, 1771 when the mother was 61 years old, with the child dying one day later on Sept. 13, 1671.

Fourth, despite Ann's erroneous inscription that suggests she was b. circa 1700, or nine years older than her husband contrary to the order of things in that era, one undocumented source credits her with not only her four recorded children but upwards of 20 children. Eleven were purportedly b. when Anna was between 51 and 63 years of age. At least four of the erroneous children are the recorded children of Barnabas Baker and Mehitable Smith of Yarmouth, Mass. (Mehitable, Barnabas, Smith and Elkanah), Barnabas Baker of Yarmouth being not related in any manner to Nathaniel Baker's ancestral family.[*/3]

Nathaniel held minor civil positions at Barnstable: fence viewer, 1752; grand juryman, 1763; petty juror, 1772 [BTR 2:133, 2:194, 3:45]. No baptisms of his known children are found in either the Barnstable East or West Parish church records, and Nathaniel was not admitted to membership and communion at the Barnstable East Parish church until Mar. 2, 1790 when he was administered communion:

"at his own house. Being confined by weakness and the infirmities of age-Agreeable to a vote of the Chh. passed the preceeding Sabbath." He d. per the same church record one year later "Mar. 20, 1791 [in his] 83d [year]."

The four known children of Nathaniel Baker, Jr. and Ann(a) Lumbert b. of record at Barnstable are:

• i. Isaac Baker, b. Apr. 2, 1734, d. Dec. 13, 1820 at Pelham, Mass.; m. Oct. 6, 1754 at Barnstable, Rebecca Lewis, dau. of James Lewis and Rebecca Hatch, b. Aug. 5 (bp Aug. 11), 1734 at Barnstable. She d. Dec. 23, 1820 at Pelham, Mass. Nine children of record, the first eight recorded at Barnstable, the youngest at Pelham, Mass.

• ii. Mercy Baker, b. May 6, 1738, d. Nov. 23, 1817 at Barnstable (g.s.); m. May 8, 1760 at Barnstable, Ephraim Berry, whose parentage is unknown. He d. June 25, 1804 at Barnstable (g.s.) Nine children of the family, most who either died young or unmarried.

• iii. Binney Baker, b. Oct. 2, 1751; m. Aug. 19, 1774 at Barnstable, Sarah Conant, dau. of Charles Conant and Joanna Bursley, b. June 7, 1754 at Barnstable. Seven children of record at Barnstable.

• iv. Anna Baker, b. Jan. 18, 1754; she is likely the Anna Baker who m. May 25, 1775 at Barnstable, Samuel Bacon, s. of Joseph Bacon, Jr. and Miriam Coleman, b. Jan. 19, 1751/2 at Barnstable. He d. in 1781 at the West Indies. Two children of the marriage (Robert and William), the children of the widow Anna Bacon, who along with their mother were mutually bapt. Sept. 4, 1791 at Barnstable's East Cong. Church.

In memory of Mr. Nathl Baker who died March 20, 1791 aged 81 years. [Barnstable Town Records CD, NEHGS 2002]
