EDITH AVIS HENDLEY BROWN
(Age 96)
Published in Washington Post from March 6 to March 8, 2011

On March 1, 2011 in Falls Church, VA. She was born September 30, 1914, near Clarendon in the house her father built which is still there, a part of historic Arlington County. She remembered soldiers from Fort Myer, destined to fight in World War I, coming to the house for a Sunday dinner. She married Max H. Brown in 1934 and their marriage spanned 55 years until his death in 1989. They were raising their family in Arlington when World War II started. Max joined the army medical corps and she was an army wife for the next 20 years. The Browns were in the first group of American army dependents to sail to Europe at the end of the war. They lived in Livorno, Italy and Munich and Nuremberg, Germany. The family returned to the States in 1948 and lived in Oakland, CA and New York. When Max was posted to Korea, she and her six children moved back to Arlington, very near to her childhood home, to await his return.
She was a volunteer at her children's schools and taught third grade religious education at her church. When Max retired, they spent most of the year at their home in Nags Head, NC, where they enjoyed fishing, spending time with friends, and family visits. As a widow, she traveled, sailed down the Rhine and visited England.
She is survived by six children, Jim, Sydney, Australia, Jeanne, Burke, VA, Judy, Falls Church, VA, Jerry, Plano, TX, John, Lino Lakes, MN and Janet, Blacksburg, VA; 16 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.
Friends may call at MURPHY FALLS CHURCH FUNERAL HOME, 1102 W. Broad St. (Rt. 7) on Wednesday, March 9 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at St. James Catholic Church, 103 N.
