Blues Singer. Born Rosa Deschamps, she was one of the greatest blues singers of the "Classic Blues" period of the 1920s and 1930s. She left Kentucky at an early age and joined her uncle's traveling circus. She toured throughout the south with her husband, Slim Henderson, before moving to New York City where she made her recording debut on the Victor Record label in 1923. She appeared in numerous Broadway productions throughout the 1920s and the early 1930s as well as recorded over 100 tracks for various record companies. By the mid 1930s, her career faded and she began working in a New York City department store, where she stayed for many years, only performing occasionally. She died at Bird S. Coler Hospital on Roosevelt Island, New York in 1968.
