U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator, Georgia Governor, Presidential Cabinet Secretary. He graduated from the College of New Jersey, in 1799, studied law, admitted to the bar in 1802 and commenced to practice law in Augusta, Georgia. He was Attorney General of Georgia, in 1808 and elected as a Democratic Republican to the Thirteenth, Fourteenth and Fifteenth Congresses, serving (1813-18). He then was elected to the U.S. Senate as a Democratic Republican to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of George M. Troup, serving (1818-19). Leaving the Senate, he was appointed Minister to Spain, serving (1819-23). In 1823, he was again elected to the Eighteenth, Nineteenth and Twentieth Congresses, serving until his resignation in 1827. He was then elected as a Democrat as the 33rd Governor of Georgia, serving (1827-29). He was again elected to the U.S. Senate as a Jacksonian to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of John Macpherson Berrien, serving (1829-34). After his term, he was appointed Secretary of State by President Andrew Jackson, in 1834 and served until his death at age 60.
