Chinese Communist Leader. Born Teng Hsiao P'ing in Guang'an District, Sichuan province, China, at the age of 15 he was sent to a preparatory school in Chongqing. Later he left for France, where he participated in the work study program for Chinese students and joined the China Socialist Youth League in 1922. When the Communist Party called its members home, he stopped in Moscow for extra study and returning to China in 1927, he played a role in organizing the Peoples Liberation Army. After the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, Deng held a number of important military and civilian posts such as Member of the General Staff of the PLA, Member of the Central Committee, Member of the Politburo, Secretary-General of the CCP and Vice-Premier of the State Council. As leader of the Communist Party of China under Chairman Mao before his death, he led China towards a market economy. He abandoned many orthodox communist doctrines and attempted to incorporate elements of the free-enterprise system. He was the most powerful figure in the People's Republic of China from the late 1970s until his death at age 92 in Beijing, China.
