Scientist. A physicist and Nobel Prize winner, she and her husband, physical chemist Joseph E. Mayer, co-wrote "Statistical Mechanics" in 1940. She conducted research on isotopes for the atomic bomb project in World War II and after the war became professor of physics at the Enrico Fermi Institute for Nuclear Studies at the University of Chicago. She was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics along with Johannes Jensen and Eugene Wigner in 1963.
