James Lafayette Thompson was born and reared in Thomaston, Upson County, Georgia. He farmed with his father Jesse D.H. Thompson on their family farm south of Thomaston. In 1900-1904 he purchased farm land in the Shellman area of Randolph County. He and his wife Mattie moved their family by wagon train to their new home in Shellman.
