Bill Brandt, internationally recognised photographer and Bayswater's answer to David Bailey. Though German born he lived in London from 1933 onwards. His father was German but was born in London. You must decide whether Brandt was a good or a bad photographer. His candid shots, if indeed candid might be regarded as remarkable and it might be surprising if he didn't get punched in the face a few times. If these shots were staged, then they can be regarded as ordinary, except for the difficulties due to prevailing light. His treatment of the female form is likely to leave us cold. However, one of those photos "The Woodman's Daughter" stands out and may be found disturbing. His photo of the London Bus crossing Battersea Bridge would do credit to any photographer. Bill Brandt lived latterly with his third wife, Dorothy, usually known as Noya, in London W.8. Much of Brandt's early work was done using a Kodak police camera. Later he moved to a Hasselblad, which gave results which were less hit and miss.
