Retired Official of Columbia Plant Passes

Pittsburg, Calif-Sept 23

The steel industry has lost one of its colorful figures today with the passing in a Seattle hospital of John P. Lodge, 75, retired superintendent of the rolling mill at the Columbia Steel Company plant here.

Lodge, whose history was that of the history of steel, died at 7 o'[clock Wednesday morning (22 Sept 1937) after an illness of only a few months.

Retired from Columbia Steel Company four years ago, Lodge and his wife left Pittsburg late in March of this year for Oakland where they resided for a month before leaving for Seattle to make their home with a son.

Lodge had made steel his career since the age of 11, when he was first employed in Ironton (Ohio), his birth place, as a water carrier. Growing with the mills, he became a roller and was believed at one time to commanded the highest salary ever paid a man in his profession, his monthly wage were reaching a high of $1500.00.

The former Pittsburg man had worked he boasted "in every steel town from Pittsburgh, PA to Louisville, and from Nova Scotia to Vancouver".

He first came to Pittsburg (California) in 1929 with the late X. A. Becker, whom he assisted in contracting the rolling mill here.

Funeral services will be held in Oakland Friday.
