Son of Annie Alvis and Adron Kirkman. An article in the Greensboro Daily News, October 18, 1942, related that he was killed in action "somewhere in the Pacific area." He had enlisted in the Marine Corp in October 1939, and had see service in many parts of the world before volunteering for the parachute battalion in May 1941.

Temporary interment was made where he was killed. Surviving were listed as his mother, three sisters, Mrs. Al Pearlman and Miss Rebecca Kirkman, both of Greensboro, and Mrs. S.V. Williamson, of Bessemer, and two brothers, Bobby Kirkman and Alvis Kirkman, both of Greensboro.

His body was returned to the United States in 1948. His obituary in the Greensboro Daily News, May 20, 1948, provides that he was the first Guilford Count casualty in World War II, who was killed in the marine landing on Guadalcanal September 14, 1942. He was provided fill military honors by the Adrian L. Kirkman Marine Corps League Detachment, which was named in his honor. Surviving were listed as his mother, Mrs. A.L. Kirkman; two brothers, Alvis and Robert Kirkman, and three sisters, Mrs. Al Kirkman, Mrs. Stancil Williamson and Miss Rebecca Kirkman, all of Greensboro.
