BIO:
When he [William Thornton Hanks] was a little boy and his mother was sick and dying, she said of him to a friend, "He is a good boy". Little Will, never forgot that.
His daughter Stella (Hanks) Burt states, "Father was a Station Agent at Le Grand for thirty years. For miles around he was respected and liked. Since coming to Portland, a lady told me how much she thought of him and I did not even know that she knew him. In 1846 when father was twenty years old he married 1st Harriet Elmira Francisco [Sisco], a pretty French girl of sixteen on 5 September 1850 in Richland Twp, Darke County, Ohio Three children
Harriet their mother died in just three months after Louis was born on 28 July 1854 in Salem, Henry County, Ohio and left Louisa and baby Louis. Louis lived only a few months after her death. Louisa [Sophia Louisa] was raised by grandmother Hanks and Aunt Mary [Hanks Schofield].
William was a clerk in a store in Le Grand. He married his 2nd Wife Sarah Mote and they were married on the 25 May 1862 in Le Grand, Iowa. They were very happy together. Soon after his marriage William secured the position of Station agent at Le Grand, learning telegraphy after he was forty years of age. For miles around he was respected and liked. He was at Le Grand Station for thirty years, a faithful and efficient servant of the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad.
