Clyde was born into a railroad family beginning work for the Santa Fe railroad in 1908 as a brakeman. He migrated to Chanute, KS from Lawrence. In 1918 he was promoted to conductor which he continued as for the rest of his life. He was a freemason and a member of the Ancient order of the Mystic Shrine, Mirza Temple. He married Lena M. Bowers in 1909. Two children were born to the union; Howard Clyde Blanton and William Harold Blanton and one grandchild James R. Blanton.
