Young Man's Death
The District Coroner, Mr. F. T.Scroope, PM., yesterday held an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death of Archie Lewis Goodwin on Monday of last week.
Evidence was given that the deceased young man, who was a member of the Australian Military Forces, had been granted three weeks leave from about June 8 to plough some land at Glencoe. During this period of leave he developed a heavy cold and also had to receive attention for a carbuncle on his neck— factors which medical evidence suggested were responsible for his reluctance to return to camp and which also caused such a state of mind that he was not responsible for his actions. The Coroner returned a finding to the effect that deceased died from the effects of strychnine willfully administered by himself at a time when he was suffering great mental strain and was not accountable for his actions.
