Grace Rich Simms died on Wednesday, July 28, 2004 at Cherrydale Nursing Center in Arlington, Virginia. During the 1920's, Grace was one of Virginia's first fashion models, working for Miller and Rhodes' French Room. After marrying Dr. Reuben Foster Simms, she became Richmond City President and State President of the Medical Society of Virginia. She helped start the society's first fundraising antique show, which was so successful that the annual Grace R. Simms Philanthropic Award was established. Grace served on President Nixon's committee for women in the White House and volunteered at the Smithsonian. Grace is survived by two granddaughters, Dianne Van Der Reyden and her husband, Guillermo Mata and Susan Kilbourne Guzo and her husband, David Guzo. She is also survived by numerous nephews and nieces. Friends may call the Demaine Funeral Home, 520 S. Washington Street, Alexandria, Virginia 22314 where the family will be present on Friday, August 6, 2004 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. The funeral service will begin at 6:30 p.m. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, August 7 at 1 p.m. at Sunny Slope Cemetery, West Point, Virginia.
