Edward was born Edward Thomas Smith, on 20 Aug 1889, to John and Anna Pooley Smith. On 20 May 1916, he married Aenid Fallgatter. They had two daughters.

Sometime between 1920-1925, he left his family and started calling himself Edward Fiske O'Hara. He filed a late birth record for himself after his mother died, changing his name, his father's name, and the year. In addition, he changed the county in which he was born. When filing for a Social Security account, he falsified his and his father's names, in addition to his birth date. Whether the birth date change was intentional or accidental, one never knows, however, I have to believe the other changes were obviously intentional. He was definitely the black sheep of the family.

While in Denver, he married Thecla Clara "Pat" Riedel on 7 Mar 1925, never having divorced Aenid as far as I can find. They moved on to Oregon and had one son. By 1928, they were living in Los Angeles. When their son was about 10 (1935), they were divorced.

Sometime between 1942-1944, Edward married Mae Coe (nee Staine).
