Henry Bales was the son of William and Catherine Nelson Bales. He left Kentucky in 1904 and went to Bureau County, Illinois. He helped on the construction of the Illinois-Mississippi (Hennepin) canal and after it's completion he lived at lock ten near Tiskilwa where he was lock tender until his death from an accidental gun shot wound.
