He and Jane were married 28 May 1863 in Deavertown, Ohio. They had 7 children the first one born dead in 1865 while he was on duty in the Shenandoah Valley.

He enlisted in the Union Army May 12, 1864, in 160th Regiment which ended Sept 1864. He ren-enlisted March 12, 1865 in the 192nd Regiment. In both enlistments he answered the call of President Abraham Lincoln for medical volunteers. His service ended Sept 12, 1865.
Then he reopened his medical practice in Bremen Ohio and stayed there for 25 years when he moved to Corning in 1884 and continued his practice. In 1920 he closed his door and "tried" to retire. He delivered 1600 babies, 34 in one month which 3 came in one night.
