Feb 5, 1993 - Carroll Times - Sister Janine Bayley, 74, of Carroll, who served as an educator for 54 years including 16 years at Kuemper High School, died Wednesday night, Feb. 3, 1993, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll following a long illness. Mass of the Christian burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, at Holy Spirit Church in Carroll. The celebrant will be Father Steve Brodersen. Concelebrants will be Father Mervin Hood and Father Terry Roder. Burial will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Carroll.

The lector for the Mass will be Clete Windschitl. Gift bearers will be Linda Shivers, Winnie Geelan Potthoff, Sister Betty Daugherty and Sister Nancy Hoffman. Mass servers will be Aaron Greteman, Dale Reineke and Ryan Weber. Eucharistic ministers will be Valerie Windschitl and Pat Templemeyer. Placing the Christian symbols will be Laura Gauderman, Kathy Hamill, Sister Mildred Tigges, Sister Cariita Carey, and Jim Auen.

Prelude music will be provided by the Kuemper High School string ensemble, and vocal music for the Mass will be provided by Sister Rita Meyer and the Holy Spirit choir. Casket bearers will be Dave Auen, Jim Auen, Don Templemeyer, Cyril Heinrichs, Frank Liewer, and Terry Sexton. Honorary casket bearers will be Sister Francis Xavier Seidl, Sister Mary Elizabeth Heller, Sister Bernye Stark, Sister Cathryn Meyer, Sister Roselma Meyer and Sister Rita Heires. The staff of Kuemper High School will form an honor guard at the church. Visitation will begin at 2:30 p.m. today at Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll. Rosary will be recited at 3 p.m. today. The Franciscan Sisters will hold a prayer service at 4 p.m. today and there will be a Christian wake service at 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. There will be a memorial Mass at St. Rose Convent in LaCrosse, Wis., on Tuesday, Feb. 9, at 7:30 a.m.

Born June 25, 1918, in Carroll, Sister Janine was a daughter of William and Mabel (Best) Bayley. She spent her younger years in the Carroll community and attended St.
Lawrence School and one year at St. Angela Academy in Carroll. She entered St. Rose Convent in LaCrosse on Aug. 16, 1932, and professed her first vows on Aug. 9, 1938.

Trained as a teacher, she served for 54 years in both elementary and secondary schools staffed by her community. She served as both elementary and secondary principal at
various schools in LaCrosse, Greenwood, Middle Ridge, Haider and Prairie du Chien, Wis.; Provo, Utah; Spokane, Wash.; and Milford and Richmond, Iowa.

She came to Kuemper High School in Carroll in 1976 and served until her retirement in 1992. Over these years she taught primarily English and Latin. She headed the foreign languages department at Kuemper for many years. She celebrated her Golden Jubilee in 1988. Memorials may be sent to Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration, 912 Market St., LaCrosse, Wis.

Sister Janine is survived by three sisters, Helen Reid and her husband, James, of Sioux City; Laura Gauderman of Eugene, Ore.; and Jayne Huffman and her husband, M.D., of Des Moines; and her family of the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Harriet Hamill and Dorothy Auen; and a brother, Cecil Bayley.
