Elvin Ray Rooks
Elvin Ray Rooks, 70, died Friday, July 16, 2004, at Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Unit. He was a resident of Shelbyville and a former resident of Columbus.
He was born June 29, 1934, in Columbia, Ky. His parents were Garfield and Myrtie (Bryant) Rooks. Survivors include a daughter, Sharon Jenkins of Shelbyville; two sons, Steven Ray Rooks of Waterloo, Iowa, and Jeffery Dwayne Rooks of Shelbyville; two brothers, Raymond Rooks of Taylorsville and Elmer Rooks of Edinburgh; two sisters, Annie Bennett of Flat Rock and Hazel Kell of Edinburgh; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Omar and Edgar Rooks; and four sisters, Flossie Rooks, Avis Fisher, Laurie Kerr and Vonnie Kell.
He was employed as a carpenter for Reliance Electric, retiring in 1974.
He was a member of Taylorsville United Methodist Church and a former musician who played with Elvin Rooks and the Bluegrass Ramblers.
The Rev. Bobby Jewell conducted a memorial service Sunday at Fairland Christian Church in Fairland. Private inurnment will be conducted at a later date. Arrangements were handled by Myers Funeral Service, Reed & Jewell Chapel, 3729 25th St. in Columbus.
