The Middletown, Conn., Penny Press
of Wednesday says; Levi Hitchcock,
74 years old, died at 1 o'clock this
morning at the home of his son, A. S.
Hitchcock. He had been in failing
health of late, heart trouble being the
direct cause of death. He was a na-
tive of New York state, his wife dying
here several years ago, and being
taken to Amsterdam, NY for burial,
where Mr. Hitchcock will be taken. He
leaves four children. Mrs. William
Spencer and Louis Hitchcock of Mid-
dletown, A. S. Hitchcock of this place,
and Sergeant Herbert W. Hitchcock
of Great Barrington, Mass. Mr. Hitch-
cock was a very estimable man, of high
character, a kind father, and lovable
friend. He was a true type of the old
school of fine old gentlemen, and was
highly respected. All of his children,
with the exception of Sergeant Hitch-
cock, were with him when he died very
peacefully, as he reposed in the arms
of his son , Louis Hitchcock.
Mr. Hitchcock was born in Johns-
burg, NY, February 28, 1833. Be-
sides his children, he leaves three sis-
ters, Mrs. Jane Morehouse and Mrs.
Ruth Maxim of Bakers Mills, NY,
and Mrs. Martha Bruno of North
Creek, NY. Mr. Hitchcock was the
object of tender solicitude on the part
of his children during his declining
years, and was given every comfort.
The sympathy of all is extended to the
family in their affiction in the loss of
a kind father.
A short service will be held at the
house Thursday at 3:30 p.m., Rev.
William Slade officiating. Owing to
illness in the family, it will be private,
except to relatives and immediate
friends. The body will be taken to
Middletown, Thurday evening, and
Friday will be taken to Amsterdam, N.
Y., his former home, for interment in
Green Hill cemetery. A.S. Hitchcock,
Louis Hitchcock, Sergeant Herbert
Hitchcock and Willaim Spencer of Mid-
dletown will probably accompany the
remains.

A good many friends and acquaintences
will regret to learn of the sad affliction that has
come to Mr. and Mrs. Levi Hitchcock, who
about one year ago, removed from here to
Amsterdam. Being unable to secure better
apartments they moved into a cellar or an un-
finished basement there. They secures em-
ployment and about the time they were able to se-
cure better quarters, early in November, ty-
phoid fever prostrated several of the children
and the family's poverty became very severe.
A son, aged twenty-two, first died, then a
daughter aged thirteen, then another daughter
aged seventeen, and on Friday last another
son, aged nineteen died. The remaining mem-
bers are occupyoing an upper part of the house
and no more deaths are expected.
